Range: Touch
Target: One book or scroll, anything with writing
Duration: 1 hour/level (D)
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless, object)
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless, object)

When cast, this spell causes the targeted object to read it’s contents aloud at a rate designated by the caster. The caster may designate a particular place within the contents for the reading to begin and end. The spell can be stopped or resumed as a free action during the duration of the spell, but it requires a separate casting to repeat any of the reading. This spell will read the contents aloud in the language they are written in, and does not provide any assistance in translating. It will not activate magical text or use command words, and only works on items that contain text. It reads aloud at a normal speaking voice, the volume cannot be controlled.

If the target is destroyed during the duration of this spell, the reading ends. If pages are torn or removed from a book upon which this spell is cast, the spell will skip over those pages as though they never existed.

Scrying is the name given to the ancient technique of gazing into an object such as a crystal ball (or skull) for the purposes of divination. Although some people can achieve visions from gazing into flames or even a shallow bowl of water or black ink, the clear quartz crystal ball is the most common method.

Anyone can learn to scry. It is all a matter of practice. If you meditate it will be much easier. If you ask a question – and place lots of energy in the answer – it will manifest faster for you.

The amount of time you use for scrying can vary from a few minutes to half hour.

You usually scry alone but more than one person can scry into the same surface at the same time for information.

Though some people go through rituals before they scry – it isn’t necessary. If you wish to ask your spirit guides for guidance go ahead. Some people say a little prayer and ask for the correct information to appear.

If you are using an object – crystal – mirror – just be sure it is clean.

Scrying can be done with a number of different surfaces that include:

Water in a dark bowl – or small pool

Mirrors

Crystals – Crystal Ball Gazing

Tea Leaves – Coffee grinds

Embers in a fire at night

A dimly lit room or candle lit room – looking into the eyes of another person who sits across from you

During scrying – one gazes steadily into the scrying surface (feel free to blink or allow your point of focus to wander a bit; this is not a method of self-inflicted torture). Eventually, you should be able to pick out shapes or images in the scrying surface; these may appear as crude sketches, or occasionally with the clarity of a photograph. You will actually see these images with your eyes.

Once this happens, images may begin to form in your mind, no longer projected onto the scrying surface. When this happens, allow your attention to focus on these mental images. From this point forward, the scrying surface is irrelevant; do not be distracted by it.

As the images become clearer, you will find that you know things about what you are seeing? Background information will come to the surface of your mind. Pay attention to what you know about the images you are seeing.

Surfaces that provide a random, high contrast visual texture, such as black tea leaves in a white cup or orange sparks in a black ember, are particularly good for the first stage of the scrying process. However, the vividness of the visual images formed in this way may tend to pull your attention back from the purely mental images that should follow, thus disrupting the natural flow of ideas. Smooth, neutral surfaces, like the surface of a dish of black water, a crystal ball, or a black mirror, provide relatively few visual cues to get you started, but if you can make the transition to mental imagery quickly, the visual surface will obligingly fade into the background.

Catoptromancy

This can be done with a steamed up mirror that will form shapes.

You can also look at a mirrors through different angles.

Stand in a dark room. Place a flashlight a few inches below your face and stare into the mirror for a few minutes. You will see yourself in past lives. The images will also change after another few minutes. Watch the shape of your face change. You may grow facial hair. If you look to the side you will see spirit. This can also be done in candlelight – just be careful.

Water Scrying

Water represents the collective unconscious – the continuum – the flow of all things in the universe back to one source.

When scrying in a bowl of water – the bowl must be black or painted black.

You can add black India ink to the water to turn it black of you prefer.

Place the bowl on a table in front of you.

Feel relaxed – reduce noise level and bright lights. You may want to use soft music in the background.

Close your eyes and breath take two long slow breaths – breathing in through your nose – hold the breath for several seconds – then release it slowly through the mouth. Feel your mind and body relaxed and read to see with more than the normal sense.

Now open your eyes and gaze down into the bowl at the dark water.

You may ask a question in your head first, and wait for an answer. You may also just gaze into the bowl and watch for random images. They will appear – perhaps as shadows at first – but they will be there. You may see images that are larger – which means they will occur sooner. Smaller images in the background will take longer to manifest – if you are seeking personal information.

If you are working alongside another person – you may both see different things – your reality does vary with each of us.

You will be shown what you need to see – and hear what you need to hear (in your thoughts) that day.

One other method of scrying in water is to place a dish of water in a darkened room, lit from the sides by two candles. The dish in this case should be a solid, neutral color.

Crystal Scrying

If you are using a crystal select one that calls to you. Most people prefer a crystal ball or crystal skull. The crystal must be clear quartz – a larger crystal is best. The crystal will seem appealing to your eye. It does not have to be your ‘personal crystal’. The crystal can be clear or have inclusions in it. Many have rainbows. Some develop cloudy areas when you scry with them. It is best to find a quiet place to scry, so that you can hear your thoughts without distractions and concentrate on the objects you see.

Make yourself comfortable. Adjust your surroundings as you would for a meditation: lighting, noise level, temperature, clothing, glasses, and shoes. Cast a circle and use incense or charged candles if that is your preference. Place the object:

On a black cloth

In good light – daylight – on a stand with a light beneath it – use a flashlight – near candle light – not too close

Between your hands / fingers

Hold the object in one hand

You can scry alone or with another person to talk to.

As you prepare to scry, be sure that your vantage point for viewing the object is at good eye level. Remember that you will turn the object many times to see different things within it.

Crystal are life forms and have a lot to say and share, they are communication devices. They send and receive signals. You just have to learn to ‘tune in’ to their channel – listen with your thoughts and look a the images that appear on the screen behind your eyes. Older crystals will have more messages as they have experienced more frequencies in their time on the Earth plane and stored more information. Many crystals are record keepers, especially those from ancient civilizations, such as Atlantis.

Crystal skulls, made from very old crystals, are example of ancient crystals. They seem to have an endless amount of messages to give. Most crystals have flat areas through which one can look. These areas are called windows or doors.

Some people need time to adjust their frequency to that of the crystal so they can read into it. More experienced readers, such as myself, can pick up any crystal almost instinctively and feel the energies as if it is talking to me.

They can heal you while you are working with them though you don’t realize it as first. They simple balance the energies in your physical and other bodies.

You can place your crystal over a light of some kind to get a better look at the inside. Crystal stores often have stands with light in them that you rest your crystal on. The light then penetrates through the crystal. I prefer holding crystals up to sunlight! It gives the best clarity. As crystals change, depending on their surroundings, they do develop different patterns within them from the energies they receive.

When you are ready, have as much light as you can running through the crystal. Place one or both hands – on either side of it. Look deeply into the crystal. Allow your eyes to focus on the images within the crystal. Examine all of the shapes until you find one that calls to you. Listen to your thoughts – as the crystal begins to connect its frequency with yours. Turn the crystal in various directions to see different images and get different messages. You will intuitively know what’s best.

Sometimes the images in the crystal may appear to move as you gaze at them. You may want to close the light – then close your eyes – if they work better for you. As with all psychic skills, this could take many attempts to master. If the crystal is not in your frequency you may not receive any messages from it. Try another crystal.

Interpreting the Images Symbols

The interpretations are generally subjective. Two different people can look at the same image in a crystal and receive two different messages. The images can be about you or about another event that occurred near the crystal or object at any point in time. Crystals have messages of their own. If you are gazing at an inanimate object and see images, they may be reflections of your own soul (past lives, future events, parallel lives, messages from the spirits around you, images from your subconscious mind). Images are symbols. You can get interpretations for them from dream books, or other books with symbols.

Pendulum

The Pendulum is a divination tool made of a piece of string and a weight. The weight can be almost anything: a metal washer, a gold or silver ring, even a paper clip.

Pendulum divination has survived through the centuries. The two most common pendulum models involve either the suspension of a ring from a thin silk thread, or the suspension of a crystal from a chain. At first, I made my own pendulum using a chain and a ring, but then I bought this silver chain with a beautiful, pure crystal, and I must say it is much more accurate. Quartz crystals are extremely powerful anyway.

Whether you have made or bought your pendulum, it is very important that you purify it. Fill a bowl with fresh pure water. Say a cleansing prayer: “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean, Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow, Create in me a clean heart, And renew a right spirit within me”. Dip both ends of the pendulum into the water for a few minutes. On the night of the full moon place it in the moonlight and leave it until the morning after. Never allow your pendulum to be placed in direct sunlight! Now you need to test your tool. First, get a feel for your pendulum, carry it with you for a couple of days, keeping it in a velvet or silk cloth. It will tune into your energy. Then you would be able to test its power. Hold the chain between the thumb and forefinger and let the pendulum hang down, it should not touch anything or anyone though. But make sure your hand and arm are completely still. Wait until the crystal or ring has stopped swinging at the end of the chain before you begin. Ask a question to which you KNOW THE ANSWER IS YES. The crystal should begin to move either side-to-side, back and forth or clockwise or anticlockwise etc. Whatever patterns the movement follows, make a note that this would always be your ‘yes’ answer. (You can verify by repeating the question, to make sure…). Follow the same steps, this time asking a question to which you know the answer is NO. Again, note the movements and this should always be your own ‘no’ answer. Then you can start asking questions that you don’t have an answer to.

The ancient Romans and the French seer Nostradamus were renowned for using the pendulum. Both used a different method from the one we use today. They used a method of basin scrying by means of a pendulum to produce letters that formed prophetic verses. The bowl or basin used was made of electrum, an alloy of gold and silver. A ring with occult characters engraved upon it was attached by thread to a wand. The twenty-four letters of the Greek alphabet were engraved into the flange of the basin. The table used was probably a tripod in which to support the basin. It was made out of branches of laurel and had three legs. Laurel was the substance specified by the Enochian angels for the scrying table of John Dee.

If you’re using a ring suspended from either a silver chain or a silk thread, you should also use a goblet of water. The answers to your yes/no questions come in the form of the tapping sounds of the ring inside the glass. A single tap indicates a yes while two taps indicate a no. More than two taps indicates the spirit is not certain of the response.

Another method involves using a sheet of paper with a cross marked upon it. The ring is held suspended over the cross in the left hand upon a silk thread. If the answer to the question asked is yes it will swing back and forth along the vertical arm of the cross. If the answer is no it will swing side to side along the horizontal arm of the cross.

Once you become familiar with the use of the Pendulum, you can also use it to find lost articles or to dowse for water or treasure.

Tea Leaves

Use a traditional teacup. The bowl of the cup will fit in the palm of your hand. Select a light colored cup without decoration. You will also need a small plate or saucer. Use a loose, black tea, or a herbal tea that best suits your purposes. Do not attempt to cut up a teabag because the tea within is too finely cut. You may also sprinkle some coffee grounds in a cup of coffee. Without a strainer, sprinkle the leaves into a teapot. Add boiling water and steep until it is your desired strength.

Keep a pen and pad handy. Inhale deeply and quiet your mind. Pour the tea into your cup. Leaves will flow into your teacup along with tea and aroma. Remain calm and contemplative as you wait for your tea to cool to a comfortable temperature.

If you are right-handed, lift your teacup with your left hand. If you are left-handed, lift your teacup with your right hand. If you are ambidextrous, reach for the vessel as you normally would, stop and use the other hand. When the tea has cooled to a comfortable temperature, drink until the cup is nearly empty. If you see a twig or little stick floating in your tea, that is an early sign representing an imminent visitor. There will be a little liquid and remaining leaves within your teacup. Swish them about as desired.

You will get a general fortune if no particular question is looming in the forefront of your consciousness

You many either walk your body slowly in three circles, pass your hand three times over the cup and/or count to three aloud. Remain quiet and meditative while you pour out the remaining liquid into the saucer. Pour slowly so that some of the tea and most of the leaves remain in your cup. Leave your cup turned upside on the saucer. After a minimum of three breaths, you may turn over your cup. The remaining liquid will have drained from your cup, leaving a leaf pattern behind.

Imagine three levels on your cup. Remember when the cup was full? The surface area of your tea when you began to drink and above is the Rim Section. Remember the amount of tea you left in your cup before you dumped it out? That is your Base Section. Visualize the area of the cup that exists between the rim section and the base section. That is your Middle Section. In a relaxed and dreamlike state of mind, watch the inside of your cup. Allow patterns to drift into your consciousness. Interpreting the leaf patterns and shapes is like taking a Rorschach Inkblot Test. Allow your imagination to wander.

If your vessel has a handle, read clockwise from the handle. If you vessel does not have a handle, read clockwise from 12 o’clock.

The first pattern you see is the symbol representing your dominant character, quality, state of mind or question. Jot down your observations on a piece of paper.

The rim section of your teacup represents this moment in time. From your own inner quiet and open-minded sight, do you recognize any symbols or patterns? View a symbol lexicon for some ideas to stimulate your imagination. Jot down your observations.

The middle section of your teacup represents the near future — usually no more than a fortnight. From your own inner quiet and open-minded sight, do you recognize any symbols or patterns? View a symbol lexicon for some ideas to stimulate your imagination. Jot down your observations.

The base section of your teacup represents further away in time. From your own inner quiet and open-minded insight, do you recognize any symbols or patterns? View a symbol lexicon for some ideas to stimulate your imagination. Jot down your observations.

Bubbles represent money. Little twigs or sticks represent people. Horizontal twigs warn of untrustworthy people; vertical twigs represent straightforward people. Drops represent tears or sadness.

Study your list of observed patterns and symbols. What do they mean to you? Seeing a dog can mean one thing to one person and quite another to someone else. The patterns in the rim section apply to your present. The middle section patterns are speaking to your near future. The images you see at the base of your cup relate to your distant future or the ultimate conclusion of your question. The power of tealeaf reading comes from your own subconscious and imagination, identifying the patterns you see. The patterns you recognize in this process are unique to your own personal state of mind. You can also use this process to see and describe patterns thereby stimulating the introspective imaginations of your friends and family.
